quick question on rear strut/shock

Default quick question on rear strut/shock
what is that little cylinder looking thing that hangs off the side of the rear struts/shocks? I've always wondered why that was there.

i think it is an oil reservoir for the shock to make more room for shock stroke. i may be wrong
