I think it would be easy to keep it in place but not tearing it up is another thing.....

DJ,
Have you thought about adding more thread to the shifter shaft so you can use the lock nut?

Just saw this thread. Its kinda funny, I was sitting in my room looking at my original shift knob and came up with the idea to countersink it like the Voodoo knob, then after that I see this thread.

I did the same thing (polished) to my aluminum shift knob. It removed all the scratches from the previous owner and looked awesome.

There are some issues with the polished knob. Since you realize you removed the protective coating, you should also know that there is nothing left to protect the metal. Protect it from what? All the oils and dirt that come off your hand (and that doesn't take french fries into account).

My nice, shiny super bling shift knob quickly became tarnished, and the finish looked almost flat/matted.

I had to constantly wipe off the knob (that's right folks, knob polishing!) just about every time I got out of the car. Even still, I found that it was necessary to use "Mother's Mag Cleaner" every couple of weeks in order to restore the bling. I got tired of the dust the polish creates, which made me vacuum out the car, etc. Big hassle!

So, my eventual solution was to switch to the MY02+ leather-wrapped version. Bingo! No more scratching by jewelry, and it doesn't get HOT like the all aluminum one does.

Just a heads up!

That is one home-shined knob.

OH the fun you could have with the responses here.
