Default Q for S2k'ers in snowbelt areas

do you feel that the car being light, RWD, and no advanced electronic stability control like DSC(BMW) avail, it needs true studless Q rated snow tires? or are 'performance snow' tires like LM22 or Dunlop M3 good enough?

5th winter coming up for me. I run Blizzak MZ-01. A couple other locals run Blizzak LM-22. Depending on the type of roads you encounter will determine how aggressive a snow you need. You can get by quite nicely with the LM but you had better think twice before driving into really deep stuff.
Being a lighter car and RWD is not an issue. Don't forget what life was like on the roads before FWD was widespread. Many police forces and taxicab companies utilize RWD and always have. They don't stay home just because of snow. Driving skill and snow tires are the key.
Stability control is not necessary unless the driver is totally inept and even then, if he needs S.C., there will be other circumstances where he'll get into a lot of trouble that S.C. won't get him out of.

Hey xviper, do you put a a bag of sand (or equivalent) in the trunk to put more weight ion rear wheels? Will be my 1st winter with S and am considering doing that.

I've never used extra weight in the trunk but if this is your first winter, I guess another 100 lbs wouldn't hurt. Just take it easy till you can find an empty parking lot to play in and get used to what your inputs will do to the car and what you need to do to react to what happens. Here is a thread with vids of us playing in the snow:

I run Blizzaks and put two concrete blocks (carefully ) into the trunk well.

Works like a charm over the past 3 winter seasons....
....although Dave's suggestion for parking lot handling orientation is a good one

This will be my second winter on LM22s as well.

If it snows more than 6", I stay home until the roads are plowed.

Thx for the responses.

My dad used to put a couple of sand bags in his rear-wheel drives when I was a kid. The VAST majority of my driving in winter/snow has been with fwd, so parking lot a definite must, but I think I'll try a sand bag on top of that.
