Projected value of S2000 after 8 years.
Due to my financial situation and my daughter entering college next year. I'll more than likely be driving my MY01 S2000 another 4 years. At that point I'll have approximately 140 miles on it. After checking on AutoTrader for Miata's of what would be similar vintage (8 years old) I found that the average asking price was $7,000. I'm guesstimating that I should still, assuming it's still in good shape, be able to get close to $10,000 for my S2000 in a private party sale. Any thoughts on this?

depends completely on condition and mods...
a cherried out car is gonna be worth a lot more than one that has not been maintained-
and pretty much impossible to predict prices 4 years out!

IMO, to realize the maximum return in four years leave your car as stock as possible. Take this from a guy who has modified everything he has owned. When it comes to sale day the mods do not get you much resale value not counting turbos or superchargers.

Not sure if going by auto trader "asking price" is wise (I could ask for anything doesn't mean it'll sell for that), you can go to kelly blue book (kbb.com) to see a 1999 Miata 140K miles in good condition $5200 and a 1998 Boxster with 140K miles for $11,500

I do this sort of thing for a side business. I already did some rough calculations for the s2k. Because of the low production numbers, IF they keep the car the same as they have so far, it would be worth 7500-9k in the time span you gave. You can already find 2k's with under 100k for 14k if you know where to look and are patient. Much of the value depends greatly on the future of the s2k. If they ended it next year, your car would probably never drop under 10k regardless of miles if you took good care of it. If they opt for a superior drivetrain, shave 200 lbs off of it, and or significantly change the body next year, your car will severly depreciate. Hopefully that is helpful. The NSX is a fantastic example of how a car that is considered so underpowered and overpriced compared to its competitors can retain such great value, it never really changed and was in low #'s (though the 97+'s are slightly more valuable for various reasons)!
