If you can do the oil, oil filter, coolant, spark plugs, air filter, distrib cap, fuel filter yourself(easy if you have socket set), you should be able to knock off a couple hundred easy.

60,000 mi/96,000 km/4 yrs
Replace engine oil and filter.
Inspect front and rear brakes.
Check tire inflation and condition.
Inspect tie rod ends, steering gear box and boots.
Inspect suspension components.
Inspect driveshaft boots.
Replace air cleaner element.
Check parking brake adjustment.
Replace rear differential fluid.
Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches with multi-purpose grease.
Inspect brake hoses and lines (including ABS).
Check all fluid levels, condition of fluids, and check for leaks.
Check all lights.
Inspect the underbody.
Inspect drive belt.
Replace dust and pollen filter
Replace transmission fluid.
Note, your timing chain does NOT need to be replaced (it's a chain not a belt. duh. lol), so the dealership shouldn't even be including it in the price.
Really, the only thing you need to pay the dealership to do is oil change, diff fluid change, and tranny fluid. Unless you can do those yourself too. You can change your air filter and the dust/pollen micron filter yourself. (takes 5 minutes)

Thanks for the input. I was concerned about the mysterious "engine tuneup," because I thought it included valve adjustment and other tweaking. However, if it's only fluids than I think I can take care of almost all of it.
The only question outstanding is...What the heck is a fuel filter and does it ever need to be replaced?

Something to also show concern about:
Tire rotation - they charge for it, but you cannot do it on an S2000.
There are lots of things included in these package service deals that you can get ripped on. My intermediate service is just like an oil change but they replace the air filter and rotate the tires as well as poke a few things under the car that if there were a slight problem with them, they'd tell me about it while they had it on the lift just to make an extra buck on a simple oil change.
Since the tires cannot be rotated and an air filter can be had for $35-50, my service "deal" isn't so much of a deal after all. The dealer can also come up and say that the service was even MORE expensive because it was an S2000 - even though they did less work.

give HOCKEY a PM. From what i hear, he does a awesome job and takes really good care of your car unlike some stealerships.
The required maintenance areas have already been listed above, but I can help you simplify it a bit more. Here is what I do for a 60k service:
1. Motor Oil
2. Tranny Fluid
3. Diff Fluid
4. Cabin/Pollen Filter
5. Intake Filter
......inspect this, poke that. I do like to spray the rubber (CV boots, etc.) with silicon spray and that is about all you need to do.
If you weren't in the Bay Area, I'd offer up my mobil service........but that is a bit far. Hehehe
By the way I charge $175 for OEM fluids and $205 for synthetics.....plus a $50 house call fee.
Good Luck,
David "Hockey"

My service place in Berkeley wants $573 to do the 60K service.
I'm not sure how much it costs to replace a timing belt and do an egine tune-up, but this sounded high to me.
What should I expect to pay for a competent mechnic to do this work?
AND Is it important to change the belt and do the engine tune-up?
Thanks.

I hope no one at your service place told you that a timing belt change is required.

If you pay Honda for a 60K service, you are being robbed. I just did most of the 60K service today for the cost of fluids and washers (oil change, tranny change and diff change) and it was only my 20K service for me!
No need to replace the timing belt when you have a timing chain. At the most, you might need to have it tightened, but at 60K, I seriously doubt that it needs to be adjusted.
All the other stuff (inspect brakes, hoses, etc.), can be done just as easily yourself as by Honda (you touch it and look at it).
Definitely do it yourself or have someone help you out. It's too easy and cheap to do, and you'll learn more about your car. And it won't take too long.
Figure:
Honda oil filter and washer: $6.10
Mobil 1 synthetic (5.5 quarts for fill, you'll have an extra .5 for later): $25
2 quarts Honda MTF: $8
Drain and fill plug washers: $1
1 Quart LE607: $12
Drain and fill plug washers: $2
Air Filter: $24 (Honda) $42 K&N
Hepa filter: $23
(and of course tools if you don't have your own. Figure, a socket set, wrench, jack stands, jack, oil drain pain, pump for fluids, etc.)
Saving hundreds of dollars and knowing your car better: PRICELESS
