You should be fine just be safe....and watch that first rain/snow. Don't test it just remeber what we have told you. I got my S when I was 19 and now I'm 27 with the same car and much more power. So it's all up to you to keep her in good shape.

On a side note I just won a car show a few weeks ago and when I was walking back with my award some guy in the crowd said under his breath but so I could hear it "it must be nice to have your parents give you everything" its probably because I still look young.......little did he know I've been on 5 deployments two to Iraq for a year each time to pay for my car/mods. Later my friends told him that and hopefully he felt like dirt....but it's never good to assume.

Ok anyway good luck and be careful.

I would recommend going with an ap1 2002-2003 with 50k+ miles which you should be able to haggle/pick up for 15k or less. Also don't worry about your age, just be responsible and don't do anything dumb and endanger other people. Having an S2k at 18 isn't too bad, I know a few 16-20 year olds with E46 M3's, M5's and E92 M3's which is dumb in my opinion.

Good luck and enjoy the car!

you're going to be rolling the dice. this is a reliable car, but you need to be prepared to drop a new motor, transmission, diff in at any time if you drive the car hard, especially on with 50-60-70k miles on it which is direction you are heading. cheap and this car don't go along. it's not like a Porsche, but it's not like a Civic either.

At the same time everyone has different expectations about what they want out of a car. For me I want to drive it hard which means replacing all the fluids every 4000 miles, new tires when they get to 40%, brake pads, rotors etc. This is probably an extreme and I think you could do ok if you somewhere in the middle between granny and I. But you still have to worry because of the high miles and how the car was taken care of previous to you. I know of many people that have blown a motor in 20k-30k just driving "spirited". You mis shift once and it's $4k minimum.

Just keep these things in mind.

hah love the haters.
Do what you want.
I was 17 and bought my 02 Audi S4 paid for by myself.
also had (1995 chevy s-10 with a v8 350, 1994 Geo Tracker (beater)) all at the same time
Now i am 20 going on 21 shortly

Audi ran into problems. and i didnt wanna fix it so i traded it in for now what i have which is a 2004 Mini Cooper S. still being paid for by me.
I also now own a 2005 Yamaha R6 which again is paid off by me.

And now i am looking into picking up a 2004-2005 S2k
and also will be pickign up another S4 in place of my mini cooper.

So if you are smart with your money and know how to handle your self. it is very obtainable.

Side notes:
I goto school full time. almost done. and it does help that i have a very good job and its only part time so i can focus on my school work.

GO FOR IT! Find what you want and get it. I never look for opinions from other people ever. If u like it then you will love it once you own it.
Only advice i may take is mechanical if i have not been familiar with the car before.

Good Luck!

Oh yeah, I'd never let anyone tell me what car I should get (unless they're giving it to me for free). I'm going to get the car I want, but I figure asking for advice about the best model/miles for a lower-price car isn't a bad idea.

i got my s2000 at 17 too.... but mine was an 07 that i paid for. one thing i will tell u im happy as hell i have a 06+ b.c of VSA. ur new to RWD and im telling u a early gen S2000 is gonna put u in a tree. i would highly recommend either a 06+ or not an s2000.

its not just about having experience driving a rwd car. its overall driving experience. fortunately im been driving consistently since i was 15. got my license at 16... so ive been driving for 2 years b4 i got my S2000. i learned on a 03 325i. totally two different beasts. the VSA has saved me a couple of times the first month or two i had the car.

Make sure that you can afford to own the car, not be owned by the car.
