Photos of new Rick's Richmond Gear 4.57 Gear set
I had a chance last night to inspect the first sets from the Richmond Gear production run of 4.57s rear gears. These are so beautifully made, it's almost ashame to hide them away in the differential For shipping, Richmond Gear has packed each gear set in a thick custom-made foam sandwich, which slips into a cardboard slip case. This package will ensure that the gear sets arrive in perfect condition, not matter how roughly they may be treated along the way.
At first I was surprised at the appearance of the gears -- the do not look at all metallic and are a dark gray with a very smooth finish. While the surface feels oily to the touch, it is actually quite dry. The color and feel is the result of the PolyDyn coating, which impregnates the surface of the metal.
Here's a photo of the ring and pinion in one side of the foam package:
And another of them out of the package.
