yes and no, most people just wing it with the spray can and it comes out nasty, but give a skilled diyer/painter a rattle can and you cannot even tell how's is it done. it's all about prep work and proper stages.
clean
stripe
sand
fill(if needed)
clean
prep rag
primer
enamel paint
wet sand
clear coat
wet sand(if need)
it's all about the detail, most of the average diyer will skip some stage and the rest of us assume rattle can is crappy, etc. for example the average diyer will not sand down the perfectly shiny oem finish, a perfectly smooth finish has little mechanical adhesion for the paint. The different between a primer and a self etching primer, etc
one thing about powdercoating is that it COULD weaken the structure of the wheels, there's been cracked/destroyed wheels and upon inspection from the MFG, it turns out that the powder coating process was to blame.

Here's a few pics, as promised. I'm just gonna put the links up, the pics are too big for the forum (don't wanna screw everything up w/ my huge pics).

(Yeah, I know the yard looks like crap, we're having a bad drought here w/ some serious water restrictions)
As for those wondering about my roadkill, I have no idea what it is. I was on a S2000/NSX group drive (vids here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mok4dwj0uSA ). We made a pit stop and one of the guys came up to me and said, "I hate to be the one to tell you, but you have a big hunk of meat hanging off your bumper." We snapped some shots, got it off, and were back on our way. The only thing I can figure is that the NSX in front of me slung it up and it stuck to my bumper. I think I woulda noticed if I'd exploded a bunny, or whatever it may be

When you guys are wetsanding the enamel paint - what grit are you using (prior to clearcoat)? And then once clearcoated what grit are you wetsanding with - 1000, 1500?
Mine are turning out really awesome so far but I just want to be sure I am doing it right...(these are track wheels for my 944 turbo btw)
Thanks,
Sam

i would agree that powdercoating is a better option, and would reccomend that over painting them.

PC is a more durable finish.. stands up to rocks better, and is more resistant to pitting.
there's a very big different between a ghetto rattle can job(not saying spray can itself can't be good) from a quality done paintjob.

It's all in the prep. I skimped and and got sick of "sanding" my winter wheels, and after months of salt/grime/wear, some parts of the paint are chipping off.
The most important part I believe is masking and sanding. The spray is quite forgiving (oversprays don't show as much).
