Paint is not the way to go, powdercoating however is.

paint works but needs to be touchedup when you get new tires. My wheels are painted and only the lips were slightly scuffed from new tires being mounted. just my .02

Why don't you ask the guy whose ride that is... It so happens to be a local's ride and I know he used Duplicolor wheel paint, available at most auto parts store.

Although the results from a can is good enough for some, I will agree with the above poster about powdercoating vs painting as well, much better durability and over all look.

i would agree that powdercoating is a better option, and would reccomend that over painting them.

yes and no, most people just wing it with the spray can and it comes out nasty, but give a skilled diyer/painter a rattle can and you cannot even tell how's is it done. it's all about prep work and proper stages.

clean

stripe

sand

fill(if needed)

clean

prep rag

primer

enamel paint

wet sand

clear coat

wet sand(if need)

it's all about the detail, most of the average diyer will skip some stage and the rest of us assume rattle can is crappy, etc. for example the average diyer will not sand down the perfectly shiny oem finish, a perfectly smooth finish has little mechanical adhesion for the paint. The different between a primer and a self etching primer, etc

one thing about powdercoating is that it COULD weaken the structure of the wheels, there's been cracked/destroyed wheels and upon inspection from the MFG, it turns out that the powder coating process was to blame.

the curing temp of powedercoatings does reach typical aging temps of aluminum. thus changing its properties

any good PC shop will know how hot you can bake forged aluminum wheels. you won't have a problem unless you take it to some idiot.

I looked into it. Powder coated heats the wheels to 400 degrees. Too hot IMO, why not just paint them right, the factory wheels are painted.

I painted mine with the dupli-color paint and was very happy with the results. They came out really nice I've gotten quite a few compliments on them. Realistically, if you've got $500 worth of tires mounted and balanced on your AP1 wheels you'll be able to sell them for $300-400. The wheels are basically worthless; it makes no sense to invest a couple hundred bucks to have the wheels powdercoated when you can paint them myself for $4.
