Original brake pads for 40000 miles?

Original brake pads for 40000 miles?
Should brake pads ever be replaced just because of miles/time rather than being worn down. My pads and rotors only look half worn, and I thought I drove my car kinda hard. I was curious if the pad compound degrades due to heat, etc. over time.

They only need to be replaced when they are worn down. I just replaced my fronts at almost 60,000 miles because they were worn down. I still have the original backs on since they still have life left in them.
