One of my tonneau cover snaps on the elastic string broke. Is this unusual??
I have gotten good at putting the cover on and taking it off so I like to use it as I think it makes the back look better. Today I noticed the snap wouldn't lock onto the passenger side stud by the door. I looked at the inside of the locking snap and one of the three copper rings was gone so that is why it wouldn't hold.
I happened to be going to the dealer and they ordered me a new strap that will have to be sewn on. Has anyone who regularly uses their tonneau cover had this happen to them? I was wondering if it is going to keep occurring.
Thanks

If the strap is still OK, them it's an easy fix. The snaps are screwed together. You should be able to just replace the snap. No sewing. The two sides twist apart.

Neither of my straps has broken yet, but one of them vibrates like hell when I drive above 60 mph or so. A noisy nuisance; almost wish it would break so I could get the dealer to fix it.
When you have the dealer sew the new strap on, make sure it has to be stretched very tight to fasten to avoid any of this noisy vibration in the wind.

I can't remember who posted the idea first, but if you twist the strap 1 revolution before snapping it on, there will be no obnoxious buzz at speed.
I read the idea here, and have used it since. It really works. I don't know if it's because the twist effectively shortens the strap a little, increasing its tension, or if it's because the strap no longer presents a flat edge to the wind. I don't really care why, I just know that it does work.

I too have a 2000 model. I had a few of them stop working soon after I got the car. Just told the dealer and they ordered me a new one. That's weird that they are ordering a new snap, they should just get you a new cover.

Thanks for the suggestions. The service guy told me it was $800 for a new cover so they didn't think Honda would go for that. Of course, he thought it was an accesory and was looking in the Honda accesory book for details. I had to tell him it came with the car!! I smiled but they can keep fixing it for 3 years. I will try the unscrewing part first.
I too noticed a buzzing sound last night and determined it was the strap. Putting a twist in it is a good idea. Years ago I used to strap down things on top of my old car and I was always told to put a twist in them to stop that buzzing at speed.

For anyone that is interested, the part did come in but it was just a snap and no strap to sew. Because of KensS2's reply to my original post, I was able to show the service manager how it worked and I changed it myself. That's why I love this board. Lots of help!! The service manager is very nice but he admits they don't get a lot of S2000's in so they don't have a lot of experience with them.
Thanks again KenS2K
