Hmmm, I'm not so sure - I've seen some really badly scuffed, almost opaque screens over here

miata has a zipper that you open when you put the top down.
Maybe he's got something stuck in it. (There's something about Mary.")

I have seen a lot of plastic windows like that. Espically on Jeeps, Sidekicks, and Miatas. One common mistake here in CO is that the forget it is plastic and use a ice scraper to the window! When it's cold enough enough pressure will prob break the plastic.

Anyone willing to share a previous experience?

Many years ago, I saw a fellow in the dead of winter (-30*C) go out to his MG vert (or Triumph - can't recalled exactly) to brush the snow off in the morning. He wasn't very delicate doing it and the instant he brushed the plastic top it kinda disintegrated. Sorta like taking a hammer to a plexiglass sheet. But back then, plastic windows were pretty thin.

I've seen quite a few Miatas with yellowed and cracked rear windows. Does maybe using a window cleaner with ammonia in it have something to do with it?

That thing looks like a trach bag to me too. I've seen worse windows where they have been so yellowed, that you can't even see through them. They also are so brittle that if you put the top down, you'd probably crack the window right off.

I thought the Miyata came with a glass rear window.

Only the 2nd generation ones do (after 99). Thats a first gen (90-97).
On the first gen, you're supposed to unzip the rear window before lowering the top, otherwise it'll crease. Also, with a lot of age (and not using the proper plastic cleaner) the plastic will fog (Miatas pretty rarely yellow their rear window). However, thats about 100 times worse than the damage you could cause by not unzipping the top! Looks like he cleaned his window with acid!
