My final comments on this subject.......

Variation in first generation engines: Some S2000 engines will consume more oil than others depending on the tolerances inside the engine. The rate of oil consumption will often taper off between 5,000 and 10,000 miles.

Remember, this engine was a brand new, clean sheet of paper, engineering wonder. Revs 9K! 120 hp/liter! Yet, people want to compare it to their daily driver that rev's up to only maybe 6K if that. I am still amazed and appreciative that it holds together. This is a race car type design but no one is dismanataling it after every serious outing to inspect and replace parts.

One S2000 owner remarked (edited): Lets clear up some misconceptions. First, it is perfectly normal for the S2k to burn oil. Just because a particular S2k does not burn oil, does not mean that engine is better, faster, or will be longer lasting. Some people seem to gloat that they burn almost no oil, while there are those that are peeing their pants when they consume a quart every 1000 miles. There is nothing to suggest that one engine is superior to the other. A Honda engineer commented on the subject and mentioned there was an article at SpeedVision.com about how much oil was consumed in a F1 Car; it said that F1 cars consume 17.5 gallons in a 24 hour race.

2004 & later models: Based on early reports I've read the excessive oil consumption issue with new S2000 has been corrected.

Chazmo -
OK - I'll agree with you. However, it seems awfully unusual that the engines can vary so much - especially for Honda. I do realize that it is essentially a racing engine with the potential for the weekend racer. The whole car is a bargain for the money any way you look at it. A quart/ 2 quarts every two weeks to a month still seems excessive. I wonder If the Honda engineers intially figured on that much "consumption" for a "street" machine. Do the S2000's in Japan use that much oil? Do Prsche's have that degree of oil consumption? Is it due to the difference in octane and quality of gasoline as it varies in the US? As I said, I can't be that out of line. I have checked my oil every time after I filled up and I have essentially no oil consumption since June 2003. I can't even tell if it's down even a 1/10th of a quart. It doesn't get babied - rolling along at 3 digits is fun and the engine is sounding so good.
cruise with attitude and without oil consumption

Yeah, I don't know, hensonbear... The FRM cylinder liners, as xviper pointed out, certainly have a role here in the way the technology works.

I don't know if the S2000s in Japan have any different characteristics than ours. I know their engine computers are different, and don't support the OBDII standards that are required for EPA cert. in the US. And, yes, their fuel over there is at slightly different octane levels.

I'm just guessing, but I doubt there's any difference in this area between JDM and USDM.

exactly what I was thinking, either that or the Pontiac GTO (LS1 engine).

I have a 99 model s2000 and hardly use any oil at all between oil changes (every 5000kms).

Wasn't there a poll about oil consumption just recently?
