Oil cap came loose
I was driving to work and was stuck in traffic. It was hot so I rolled up the windows and turned on the AC. But something wasn't quite right and the air smelled REALLY bad and I couldn't breathe. I quickly put the top down. With no where to pull over, I drove about 5 minutes more until I got to work. I popped the hood and saw that the oil cap was loose. Lost about 1/2 a quart of oil, but still had 2 x's left on the dipstick. I put the oil cap back on and drove back home because a mechanic told me that it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Anyways, now I am wondering if any damage with done to the engine because of it?
Also, any product recommendations to get the spilled oil off?

For your convenience, here is that thread:

As for any harm being done, have you checked the oil level since this happened? If it didn't get too low, nothing to worry about.
To get rid of the oil mess under the hood, spray everything down with an engine degreaser. Connect up your garden hose to a hot water tap and hose it down with HOT water. Make sure the engine cold. Don't use a direct spray near any wiring harnesses. They should be able to take it, but why chance it.

Thanks viper. I saw that post and checked the o-ring out. It was upside down. Oil level still good. Local auto parts shop had a degreaser sale and I just picked up a bottle. Might as well think of this as an opportunity to detail my engine.

I had the same problem after a track session. It's a good thing I checked under the hood after a hard run. Only lost about a quart, too close for comfort for me. It's a good thing I had added more oil before hitting the track.
