Am thinking of buying a radar detector, I guess the question is which one. the V1 or the 8500, I think im leaning over the Escort just because of the price. Most of the threads i've read are from texas, etc. Do a lot of southcali drivers use em too? If yes which radars do you use?

Stuupid question, what happens if you get pulled over and the cop see's the radar detector. Should I tell em that its for them or something else? I really have no clue what to say in that situation

I'm curious as to what a cop would say too. Radar detectors are only illegal in VA and DC I've read, so cops really can't do anything at all. I guess maybe they'll be a lot less likely to be leniant though and let you off with a warning. Anyone have any stories?

One LAPD officer I knew told me about one car they pulled over. Told the driver he had him speeding on radar. The driver claimed he had a detector and it didn't go off, so he could not have used radar.

The officer pulled out the radar gun, shot the detector with it, and the detector remained silent.

"Time to get a better radar detector" he said, and proceeded to write the driver a ticket.

As the driver drove off, he said he saw the something fly out the window onto the pavement. When he walked over to look at it, it was the radar detector.

LOL! would have been great if we knew what radar detector he was using Well I dont think lazers can be used in freeways because of its range, and if they do use lazers on the streets, well I guess ill just have to be more careful.

I've seen laser used on the streets several times a week. The revenue officer (what good are motorcycle cops aside from revenue generation, or traffic directing when a light is out?) stands by the side of the road and zaps cars. The lazy cop then walks out into the traffic lane and flags the car down for a ticket.

Even with the efficiency of the Laser, the odds of getting a ticket are still quite low. He isn't sitting scanning traffic all the time before he gets a new "fish" to ticket. I watched one when I was stuck at a light once. It took about 5 seconds to nail a new car. He'd flag it down, warn the driver, and 5 seconds later, he was flagging down another car. From the looks of it, he was just playing with his new toy that day.
