I believe we're saying the same thing. Earplugs attenuate all sounds. As in, reduce their strength. You may still be able to perceive the 'important' sounds just fine most of the time, but there is a reduction in their strength. Thats the tradeoff to protecting you from loud, damaging sounds.

Headphones while driving is illegal in some areas, and a bad idea everywhere. If you plan to do this, at least check your local laws first.
