Default Newbie TRACK questions

ok guys i'm about to buy an S2000 and can't wait to take it to the track. Thing is, i've always been a truck guy, specifically i build rock crawlers (big trucks to go over big rocks slowly). This will be the first sports car that i've owned. So, needless to say i've never been to a track. What can i expect? How much does it typically cost? What safety precautions must be taken? How did you handle it the first time you were at the track? Any and all advice and stories are welcome.

Thanks,
-Steve

P.S. i though some of you may like to see the last truck i built, a 72 bronco...it's for sale right now. btw it's got a 5.0 SEFI from a 93 mustang and those tires are 38.5" tall

What can i expect?
To have fun.
How much does it typically cost?
Second Creek is out by DIA and is 60 bucks for a half day of track time.

What safety precautions must be taken?
Depends on the track, some won't even let the S2k run due to the lack of a real rollbar, SCR will. Don't go off track. *unless your name is Don, then it seems you are allowed to take you S2k off track*

Also, and this is just my beef, but the local tracks, SCR in particular are dangerous places. No real rules, no emergency personnel and loads of drivers with no formal education.

How did you handle it the first time you were at the track?
My advice is to make your first visit one with a club that has instructors. Failing that another fun option is to sign up for a driving clinic at one of the major schools, Bondurant, Skip Barber etc. There are a number of things you need to learn before you are not a danger to yourself and others.

If neither of the two above options works out for you, drop me a message, I am always happy to teach the basics -- and then chase you around in my own car

I would say....

leave the car stock the first time out. You will get a better appreciation/understanding of what mods you want/need and how much of a difference they will actually make. The stock S2000 is already well equipped for the track for a beginner.

BTW, I would look forward to flying off the track. If you don't, you're not trying hard enough!!

You can try autocrossing too. SCCA has programs. Also, I don't know what they have in your area but NASA Pro Racing has track days with instructors.

Good luck. If you find a good outfit to work with, you'll have soooo much fun.
