z4lunch- pics are at the bottom of page 2, and that's pretty much the trouble spot universal to the s2k for whoever has a top tear problem..that and supposedly near the latches, but I have no experience with that trouble spot.

The three pix below (not my car, pix collected from previous post) show the deal. I found on my car that the round edge on the frame hinge (black arrow) was sharp/burred and cuts into the top when the top is in the down position. In my car I rounded the edge with the file on my leatherman tool and put a patch on the wear spot.

I always thought it was that horizontal bar causing the tear. I put black vinyl on the hinge to make it stop rubbing but I still think its the bar because when you put your top up, there is a lot of pressure between the top and the horizontal middle bar.

If you actually feel the back side of the horozontal rib, it is smooth with nothing to cut the top. You need to follow the wear spot down on the outside to the top down position. Then you can feel the round hinge edge pressing into the top. If you are careful you can actually operate the top switch to raise the top while keeping a finger on the spot where the round hinge edge is pressing the top and see that is the wear spot when the top is up.
Cool thanks, I tried to slide my hand in there but I was scared of putting too much pressure on the vinyl. Thanks for relieving my suspicions.

The forum really needs a "torn top" sticky to make all viewers more knowledgable about the issue *before* the top gets serious damage. Fixing the issue before the top gets serious damage would save much time, money, and hassle.

I agree. We need one of those "OFFICIAL" threads so everyone is knowledgable on the issue at hand.

After reading this thread, I went outside first thing this morning to see if I had the tear in the top. Okay, my 2006 with 19,000 miles has the tear. What is the best thing to say to the Honda service manager so that this is covered under warranty? I don't want him to tell me "this is a wear item."

Adding another reply to say I just came back from the service manager at Honda. He said he's seen this before and that this is under warranty. He even said "there is a bulletin" out about this.

Unfortunately, I'll have to go through the worries of dropping the car off for several days and someone will have to drive it to the apholstery shop.

Is it fair to insist that I drive it myself to the apholstery shop or is this unreasonable? I only trust myself with my car. What do you think?
