I just picked up my black 01' last week. so far i love this car. i am still breaking it in but have noticed from day one a rattling noise at idle. the rattling noise seems to be coming from the rear of the car. the strange thing is that the noise goes away if the clutch is pressed down. when you let the clutch up the noise starts again. i have read some other posts about various other rattles but nothing on this specifically. has anyone experienced this?

You are probably hearing the main shaft of the transmission spinning. The noise comes up through the shifter.
When the engine is on and the clutch pedal out the mainshaft of the transmission spins, that means that all 6 gears on the mainshaft are rattling agains the 6 gears on the countershaft (that is not turning since the car is not moving). When the clutch is pushed in (disengaged from the engine) then the main shaft stops turning.
This is normal in every car. The S2000 has the transmission right next to your knee so you can hear it better.
Hope this helps,

I know exactly what you mean.... My car is 3 weeks old, had its first service last week, it now makes this strange whirring noise in any gear regardless, and also strangely enough in neutral...
However if I put in the clutch the noise disappears completely... The noise gets louder with higher revs and is very annoying... I'm sure this is nothing normal as it has only developed over the past few days....
