NEW or OLD?

You say you like sporty cars, but the S is a sports car and that's all it is. Which means you'll be giving up a lot of amenities and additional space you may be enjoying now. Make sure you're ready for that first. The AP1 vs AP2 has been discussed and fought to death. I've only driven the '03. More than adequate for "tooling" around town. I love the car. I'm sure I'd be happy with the newer one as well. Try to drive both, but either is going to be a major change from the 330. Good luck!
The difference between the AP1 and AP2 is much less than the difference between either and the BMW that you are currently driving. Either version is quite satisfactory if this is the car that you really want and can live with. If not, neither version will satisfy you.
I know a few people who have experience with both. The AP2 is probably faster and handles slightly better at speed, the AP1 revs higher (9,000 vs 8,000) and is more exhilarating near the red line. The AP2 has a slighty "softer" ride, the AP1 is more the "raw" sports car. All that said, the differences are so slight that I doubt that you'd be wrong with either choice. I'd be willing to bet that you'd be happy with either.
Keep one thing in mind, as Frank mentioned, this is a sports car, not a sporty car. Make sure that you can live with that.

AP2 basically killed the raw essence of the s2000
AP1 @ 9000RPM
AP1 @ 9000RPM
8,000 rpm... 9,000 rpm... these are just numbers. The behaviour of each is so similar at the end of the day.

Below, an excerpt taken from Sport Compact Car Article
It's a total lie. Honda says the second-generation S2000 is a kinder, gentler car. Bullshit. Don't believe it. The S2000 is still the real deal, a sports car stripped to a core of dynamic purity. That said, Honda has made a long list of changes to the S2000 for 2004, including an increase of engine displacement, meant to make the car friendlier on the street. And the changes do make the two-seater a bit easier to live with, but to say the roadster has cast aside its hyperactive ways is like saying Barry Bonds no longer hits for power.

The rest of the world deals with taxation issues on engines over 2.0 litres.
I've owned an '01 and an '04 and I prefer the '04.
Performance is basically equal, they just behave a bit differently through-out the powerband.

Every time this subject comes up there are always a few people who try to turn in into a pissing match. Unbelievable. The guy's thinking about trading his 330 for the S and he asked a question. Maybe we could just try to help him.
