Default New to Forum, Few S2000 General Questions!

Hey S2000 enthusiasts!!!

I would first off like to introduce myself, my name is Loden, but you can just call me wizwalker. Got my first 2008 Berlina Black S2000 on Saturday/Yesterday!!! I thought it would be smart to come to the pros to ask general questions about my S2000!
So here go

1) My oil is at 15% left, so I thought itd be a good idea to go ahead and change it. What type of oil is recommend or that you use for your S2000? Synthetic? Name brand?

2) When changing the oil in my car you need a S2000 Filter, correct? Where could I get my hands on one or two for future changes? Honda Dealership? Local Auto Zone? Or on the Internet?

3) Are there any absolute "No NO's" that you do not do in an S2000? Engine wise or interior wise? I couldnt think of any myself, so this question could possibly be useless

Thank You SO much for taking your time to read this post!!!
Comments WELCOME

Thanks Again,

1) you're going to get a buttload of opinions on this one. Generally, stick with a quality 10W-30 synthetic. I personally use Castrol Edge. Mobil 1 seems to be hit or miss on these engines. some people report higher consumption, others don't.

2) Yes, stick with the S2000 filter. You can get it from a Honda dealer or from handaaccessories.com, ebay, etc. You want part number 15400-PCX-004. The vast majority of users stick with the OEM filter as it was specifically designed for the S2000.

3) only big no-no I can think of is don't try to drag race it every day. The differential is a weak link on these cars and you'll end up blowing one. If you do drag launch it, rev it high enough to get the tires spinning so you don't shock the diff.

You'll find that Honda did a pretty good job with the engine from the factory, so basic N/A bolt-on parts won't get you a whole lot of performance.

Um Id be a little worried with the loss of oil you have being an '08 and all. Has the car been checked? Comp test? Leak? Why do you have so little oil left?

troll somewhere else.

To the OP, I run royal purple 10-30 with 5k oil changes. Some people hate royal purple, I like it. It made my old BMW run like an absolute champ, and have had zero problems in my S. Like the others have said, get the filter from Honda and change the oil plug gasket each time (costs like 10 cents, and is good insurance).

Also keep an eye on your tire psi. You probably have TPMS though. The stiff sideways makes eyeballing it hard, I was doing laps once with 6 psi in a tire and it looked like it might have been 2psi low only.

Run a quality synthetic oil and check oil levels regularly (at every gas fillup, premium 91+ or higher should be used)

There are 3 secret compartments hidden, it has taken some YEARS to find them all.

Run OEM s2000 filters purchased at the dealership and nothing else.

Hi wizwalker, welcome to the S2k community!

First thing I do with any used car is get all the fluids changed. In addition to the oil, make sure you go ahead and get the brake fluid, clutch fluid, rear diff, tranny and coolant done while you're at it. Its pretty cheap insurance in the long run.

1. As you've already seen, there are several opinions on which oils people use in the S2k. I've tried a few; Mobil 1, Royal Purple and now AMSoil. I noticed a bit of consumption with Mobil 1, but nothing drastic. The others have been fine and now I just run AMSoil consistently because I have a source and its pretty good stuff. Whatever you decide to use, make sure its quality and you check the oil level often -- I recommend once a week if its your daily driver.

2. I use the stock Honda OEM filter (15400-PCX-004) as well. Oil changes on the S aren't too bad in your garage (much easier than my Civic Hybrid actually).

3. As far as no/no's go, there are a few:

One thing that will bite you fast in the S2k is getting on the throttle in the curves with COLD tires. Cold tires are about as grippy as bald ones, so make sure the tires have sufficient time to warm up before getting aggressive on the throttle. Also, if you're not used to RWD, be careful in the rain and if make sure you have decent winter tires if you're going to be in the snow/ice. Driving in winter weather with summer tires is an avoidable risk.

Definitely be careful where you park it. Depending on where you live the S attracts all kinds of attention (not always good) even when more expensive cars are around. I live in the DC area, and even here where Ferraris arent rare, theft of S2ks or breaking into them is unfortunately pretty common.

Only run 91 or higher octane always. No exceptions. Any savings at the pump by cheaping out will cost you not only in performance, but also possible engine damage.

Get shin-etzu grease (handa accessories or the dealer) and treat your convertible seals and keep them pliable.

Get either Raggtop or 303 covertible top cleaner and sealer (autogeek.net) to treat your top and keep it looking new.

I run fuel injector cleaner (Redline or Techron) through my S2k usually once every 3 months or so.

Enjoy the car, its quite a machine. I've had mine over 7 years and never plan to get rid of it.

congrats on your car!

handa-accessories.com has a 6 pack of filters, and crush washers too. i have had my S for 3 months tomorrow

i also changed out my cabin filter, dealer did not change it when i bought it (they werent supposed to anyways)

i bought everything online though HandA. i used mobil 1, it will be fine, people only have burning issues in ap1 cars.

after changing oil, you will need to reset the 15% indicator. hold down on the trip button for about 10 seconds until you see the 15% flashing.. release, then hold again until it changes oil life to 100%.

Though you will pay for shipping on HandA, i was very pleased with their customer service. i called twice and had silly questions and the guy i talked to twice on two different occasions was very helpful and nice. you will save money this way if buying a few parts at once.

good luck and have fun!

Is there any disadvantage to not using the oil filter that Honda recommends/was designed for the S2000?
