Negotiating with dealerships
#13
If you are able to talk a dealer down more than $1500 on a pre-owned vehicle, be very very careful. They are either stole it as a trade-in or they bought it for cheap because it had issues...or both. Not to say there aren't good deals out there, but cover your bases. Working with a name brand dealership is good too, because they want to preserve their name and junk usually doesn't make it to the front line. (I work at a BMW dealership.)

I know they replaced the soft top there. The car is leaking oil due to the cracked block, But I was told its a gasket.
They said they didnt want to put any more money into it. Also, Now having troubles finding the actual title status of the car. Autocheck shows clean title with 5 owners. superstuddc27 looked it up, clean title with 3 owners. Dealership bring up rebuilt. wtf?????

If I buy from a dealer, I ask about financing(they make a ton of money on finance) then I talk them down on price(remember they make a shit load on financing) then talk to them about a extended warranty(they make even more money with this) and when I get my price. I ask them if there is a penalty if I pay it off early. Then after I buy the car I cancel the extended warranty(have three days to do this) and boy do they get mad(lots of lost money for them) then I go and pay off the car. Either by getting a better rate at my bank or just by giving them cash. I've bought two cars and a truck this way and I saved a lot of money by doing this but it takes time and effort on my part. But its worth it for me because I like to save money and I don't have to do this very often, I tend to keep my cars till they have well over 200k miles.

Its not exactly mom and pop, Its a smaller dealership from the same people at a bigger chevy dealer. They got the car through a trade in and fixed some stuff, Nd their autocheck, which is what they give you by default, shows up clean. I was wrong, they didnt tell me about the crack, nd they blame it on a gasket, so thats how they can get away with the 7k price tag. Even clean title, 5k at most.

Ugh I am a sales consultant at a Mazda dealership. I wish I could give everyone bottom dollar deals, but I need to make money too. The used car lot determines the value of your trade-in, so it's like a dance between sales, managers, and different lots within the same company. Unfortunately I get to be the face of everything negative about the whole experience, but it can also be extremely positive if it all goes right and the customer is not unreasonable.
