Default Need some advice

I looked at a red '01 S2K today with 43,900 miles. It has an extended 100,000 mile warranty which is good for another 3 years (BTW, does anyone know exactly what is covered under the extended warranties?).

She's asking $19,300 for the car, which is way too high IMO, but anyways...

I noticed 2 things.

1) Once in awhile, I would get a clunk when shifting, mainly in lower gears below 5k RPMs
2) With the top up, at 50-55mph, wind noise was LOUD.

Are these two things normal?

She said the top is brand new and the noise was worse with the old one...

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Run a carfax or something to see if it's a salvage, offer 17K, and read up on this site to see all the DIY maintenance you can do to get rid of the little squeaks and rattles.

Well, I can comment on the "noise" problem. Any convertible with a "single layer" top (such as the S 2000 has) will have significant wind and road noise, compared to a sedan or coupe. However, if the wind noise is in the form of a whistle or similar sound, it can mean an ill fitting top. If, however, it is a rather constant "whoosh", it is rather normal. Also, S 2000s have more road noise from the tires than you may be used to, due in part from the fact that they are roadsters and in part from the fact that they have (or should have) "W" rated or higher tires. Such tires are very stiff, high speed tires that are darn near "run flat" as to the side wall stiffness. So, they don't muffle the noise of the tread against the road as "touring" rated tires do. So, I naturally get more road noise in my S 2000 than I get in my sedan which has an insulated steel top and has softer "H" rated tires. BTW, be sure to check the tires on any used S 2000 you may consider. These cars can go through tires very quickly, and it can cost $500+ to replace all tires. Check also for abnormal wear on one side of each tire, compared with the other side. This could be only an allignment problem (an easy fix) or could be more serious (evidence of collision damage).

You should really get someone with experience with these cars to look at the one you are thinking about buying. To check for abnormalities yourself, go and drive a new one! As in all used car purchases, check Kelly Blue book as to price, along with all other references. Also, get the VIN and run a Carfax. This is not 100% reliable, but it's better than nothing.

Thanks,
Richard
