need help with extended warranty
Is there anyone out there who wishes to divulge how much and where they purchased their extended warranties? I am need of one since I am approaching 36K miles.
BTW: Most of you can appreciate that I decided to wait to buy the warranty because I was allready being hit pretty hard for being one of the first to buy the car in Dec. of 99.

Like you, I elected to deferr for several reasons, (1) insufficient data to determine if needed, (2) odds generally strongly favor the seller in most extended warranties, and (3) it gave me time to evaluate both my personsal experience and that of others over the basic three year period.
Original coverages:
Basic: 3 yrs / 36k
Power train: 3 yrs / 36k
Corrosion 5 yrs / unlimited
Optional Honda Care extended warranty and costs:
5 yrs / 60k $840
6 yrs / 75k $1290
6 yrs / 100k $1740
At the time of purchase the dealership suggested the costs would increase if I waited until the end of the third year to buy the additional two or three year coverage, but no firm costs were quoted.
Since mine is a summer only car, the mileage means nothing. If I continue to put on 8,000 a summer, I'll be in the mid-20,000 range at the end of three years. I'm still a firm believer most serious problems will occur, if they are going to occur, during that time frame. I still keep thinking that the $430/year for three more years is not necessary, so I'm still debating with myself on this one.

I bought my 02 S2K less than a month ago, and the finance manager was pissed that I declined the purchase of the extended warranty at the cost of $1,500 (6yr/75K).
He stated that I was the first S2K owner who had declined to buy one and that a head gasket repair would run over $1,800!!! Is this true???
I really don't see the point on having to buy one... at least now...
I am doubtful that I will encounter any mechanical problems that will cost more than $1500 to fix assuming the engine and transmission don't blow on me.
I also don't race my car...

I think I should mention that finance manager makes a good commision off of selling warranties and NOT the salesmen. That would expain why that guy got pissed. This is usually the reason that S2K buyers get stiffed on warranties. Finance managers figure since we are buying a car and paying full MSRP and getting sodomized by the dealer that we should spread our cheeks a little further and allow them in with the gouging dealer. When we don't, they feel left out. The dealership and sales guy get a BIG commision and the finance guys get paperwork!

That explains it....
When I said "no thanks..." he became so red... and the lies started to pour...
Like you said, many new owners who are overcome with joy at the time of the puchase, are easy prey for these people.

Refinance with a credit union if you aren't already with one, and get the warranty from them. Most extended warranties sold by credit unions allow you to use any ASE certified mechanic; whereas HondaCare, to the best of my knowledge, requires that you use a HONDA dealer service department to complete any repairs. Personally, I'd rather put red hot pokers in my eye than go back to the Honda dealer for everything for the duration of my ownership experience.
I paid $990 for 6 years, 100K miles through the dealership that sold me my car. My warranty is handled by Fidelity Warranty, an independant warranty company that usually covers Toyotas, but my dealership also sold Toyota, so they were able to sell that warranty to me. I can use any ASE certified mechanic, and it covers just about everything but wear and tear.

I'm going with an extended warranty because I have read too many stories of a big problem at say 37,000 miles, and the 7/7500 extended warranty at my dealer was priced at about $950. At another local dealer they wanted $1,450 for the same 7/75,000.

Triple-H,
Could you give the name of the dealer (and contact name if possible) from which you are buying the extended warranty from?
I am in California, and I am wondering if I can buy it from an out-of-state dealer...
Anyone?
