Default Mystery destroyed bearing material

I pulled the VTEC screen out of my spare motor. I was going to sell the motor but thought I should investigate so I didn’t sell somebody a boat anchor. I found bronze flakes in the screen. I just tore down the entire motor to all of its base components and not one sign of any bad bearing I can find. So crazy. Any thoughts?

Hmmm, I thought there were only wrist pins there. I’ll look.

For sure. A lot of material.

I cleaned the block and head this morning. More “not good”.

All cylinder walls had scoring, and one valve area had damage. All the scoring on the bores was on one side. Kinda odd.

I am so glad I didn’t sell this to some poor soul. Not a lot of usable stuff. Maybe the crank. I know it’s all rebuildable, but $$$.

Thanks for the photos.

What do the crank and connecting rods look like?

The crank and connecting rod bearings looked new, with the exception of one, which was slightly darkened. It wasn’t primrose or scuffed, just semi black but smooth.

I found a source that can Nikasil coat the bores, and the rest I can do myself. It would be a spare motor, so there would be no rush to finish it. If I do rebuild
it I’ll be plastiguage measuring every bearing clearance and putting all good parts in.
Im not sure on the head. I know the chamber can be repaired, I don’t know yet the cost. I know it’s good otherwise (not warped or cracked). The valves held water working one drop of loss overnight.
