Default Mugen vs. Spoon ECU

any thoughts on which is better? Why?

What are these mods running as far as cost?

Spoon activates V-Tech at 5100, cut at 9100

Mugen has specially mapped fuel mixture and ignition timing. 9000 rpm rev limit and 6000 rpm v-tech engagement. OBD2 sensors are eliminated.

Thanks! That has been added since I was at the site last...

Do you know what the performance gains are??

Cost on the Spoon one? I checked mungster's site and didn't see the ECU listed.

No, you'd have to PM Mingster - my price list is out dated.

Thanks, just a FYI the Mugen ECU will only give you about 5-8 hp in the mid range...that seems like some pretty expensive HP and that was from Kingmotorsports themselves.....

That sounds about right because I think it's 15 with the ECU, CAI, header and exhaust, BUT that does match the Boxster S at 255 correct?

I do not think either is designed or recommended for street use. Some increased risk of engine damage as well as warranty coverage.

Just changing the ECU alone won't do much good ... The necessary modifications need to go in place to make full use of the new ECU otherwise it's more like the same. If you want performance just off the ECU, I think what you need is a chip ... Not a complete ECU change. I don't know anyone that just changes the ECU as a modification, usually it's to compliment some other modification as well.

I agree, I think the Mugen is a nice enhancement with the matching Mugen header/exhaust. I also believe they were designed to compliment one another. A chip could have dangerous, costly negative results.

Hmm-

The US OEM ECU is very temperature sensitive. It retards ignition timing almost immediately after the car gets to nominal operating temperature.

The Mugen ECU is more aggressive. Normal operating temperatures do not affect power output. You can use the Mugen ECU in conjunction with OEM headers and exhaust- it is designed to be used with them, and in addition have the headroom in the programming to take advantage of the Mugen exhaust manifold and full exhaust.

Thus, the resulting benefits are- more consistent power output.

How important is that? It depends on how interested you are in regaining power lost through conservative ECU programming.
