As I made the final preperations to secure a new s2k, in Lexington KY, I uncovered some shocking news. My Honda Dealer just told me today that the s2000 will replace the Prelude in the Honda line up in 2003.
I was hoping to be an exclusive member of this fine automobile since I would be 1 of 15,000 to own the little stook. Now it seems as if it won't be so exclusive and I am not sure if trading in the 99 Accord V6 coupe makes sense since I am 6'4" and would have to sacrafice comfort for the "Wow" factor. Now that this car will be more common I'm not sure that I'm up for the challenge. I was hoping that I would have a little treasure that would last me for the rest of my life. I realize that if what the dealer is saying, the s2k will never be common but not exclusive. Maybe I need to save a little more and buy a NSX. Any thoughts?

OMG, now I have heard everything. Man, that story is so full of holes, I don't even know where to start!
I see your dealer is not making any effort to change their reputation as completely brainless morons!
No, the S2000 will not under any circumstances replace the Prelude, now matter how many wet dreams/sleepless nights your dealer may be having...
HondaFan, don't worry, ain't gonna happen. Period.

I seriously doubt it. I've heard that the prelude may be discontinued but s2000 "replacing" prelude? He would probably say the accord would be replacing the civic if civic was discontinued.....

the RS-X will replace the 'lude, not the S2K.
there will be two version of the RS-X - the Honda badged one and the Accura badged one (the latter replacing the Integra).
at least, this is what i've understood.

That's not true! It's well known they will discontinue the S2000 before 2002.
And in 2002 they will be making a glass rear window.
So, my guess is the Prelude is actually being replaced by a glass rear window.
Unless the Japanese word for 'differential' and 'window are the same. Nah, we've already got one of those.
Disclaimer: AusS2000 only got 3.5 hours sleep last night due to a cranky NT access router and S2000online addiction. So take everything he says with a very large grain of salt (about the size of Ayer's Rock/Uluru). He's also known to be a bit of a smartass at the best of times.

Hondafan,
Unfortunately you happened onto the periphery of something that has been much discussed on the board- how many s2000s, for how many years. http://www.s2000online.com/forums/showthre...hp?threadid=643
Consensus is, about 4 model years, and probably twice as many cars to the US alone as you've mentioned above. We are probably close to 10k cars exported to North America already- buy it if you like the car, not because you think it will be rare, or increase in value- it won't in my opinion.

According to the sales figures on s2ki.com there are roughly 11,000 in the US, or more likely 12,400 if the sales figures for January held true for Feb and Mar.
My dealer told me the Insight was going to replace the NSX.

Let's see what will be the critical point that makes Mr. Honda say enough - stop the S2000 NOW:
(1) supply actually exceeds demand,
(2) they don't want to out produce the NSX (do your know anyone who realizes it's still in production),
(3) auto writers run out of words to describe the F1 road car that a common smuck can afford if payments are spread over a dog's life,
(4) they give into dealer's complaints that they actually have to sell the car at MSRP,
(5) they say enough to those damn young bloods who tear up engines, tranny's, and tires, and then say where the hell's the warranty coverage - - my daddy paid good money for this car,
(6) they silently read the S2000Online Forms and determine that the word has been leaked by a dealer in Kentucky - Lexington, no less . . . the horse power capial of the barn yard set - and conclude the time has come . . . . damn, Hondafan, you just killed the car!

Hondafan:
You might want to skip the S2000 if the "wow factor" is the most important criteria. There are quite a few cars that will do that better. At your height the S2000 is going to be a challange. After a while the wow factor will wear out, and all you are left with is a little car with a lot of character
