Motortrend: RX-8's 9k rpm redline vs S2K vs 350Z
#22
I owned one, it's a nice car, IMO more of a GT than a sports car though. It's quick and nimble and I had more confidence driving it hard than I do the S (S still kind of scares me). But the S is faster no doubt about it.
That article is stupid, the Rx8 was just coming out when that article came out, hmmm I wonder why it won???

I raced my friend 3 times from a stop and the difference is between 3-4 cars until 100 mph. And my friend is a really good driver... so what abilities?
Regarding 14.5 in the quarter. A stock S runs 14.5 maybe a bit less. A stock rx8 runs around 14.7 or a bit less. That a couple car lengths.
It's a sports sedan made to compete with bmr at a reasonable price and it does it very well.
have a good day

Hey I'm not arguing speeds or trap times. I sponsor the Liberty1 pro team so I know a bit about the quarter mile. The only thing I said was the RX8 is in better gear ratios than the S over 100. It was designed to compete with the bmr's on the autobahn.
I know where S2000's run at the track. I've yet to see a stock S in the 13's in person but I'm sure somebody's done a good hook and made it. I have seen a couple run in the low 14's.
I guess my point is the the RX8 seems to be all in all a very good car for what it is. I've never been arguing it's better than the S because it's a whole different cat made for a different purpose. It wasn't meant to replace the rx7 either.
People buy cars for different reasons. Both the S and the RX8 stand well in their own genre.

If you look at dynos of stock rx8s and stock s2ks, in my experience, the s2000 dynos higher by at least 10-15whp on average. Then you add that the rx8 weighes 200-250 pounds more. The Rx8 does have shorter gearing but it's not enough to beat the power/weight advantage of the s2000 from what I've seen.

If I remember, the G35 coupe 3rd gear redlined at around 80mph.
So gearing wise, it's like a s2000 with 4.77 gears.

Immediatly discount anything said by someone who either:
A. Complains the ride is too harsh.
B. Complains that a convertable is too loud.
C. Brags about good gas mileage (or complains about Bad gas mileage.)
Any of the above immediatly revokes any interest I would ever have in hearing what you say. It's a SPORTS CAR for crying out loud! When the same author mentions all three they should be immediatly fired and forced to work for minivan monthly for the rest of their lives.
