Sports car people love misery I am told. I could pass on the cruise control though.

"f*cking fragile paint!!"
The paint on the S isn't that bad. I had an 02 Nissan Altima before I bought the Honda. The paint on the Altima was HORRIBLE! Only 16,000 miles on the car, and it looked like it went through a wind storm in Iraq. I had to polish it once a month to keep it looking decent. The paint on my S is beautiful.
Just my $0.02

But don't think Honda didn't consider all the things we might find annoying. Most of us agree that the S is a real bargain relative to the competitors. The design of any product is a matter of thousands of decisions and compromises .
For instance the gas cover pull. Where it's located is just about the shortest distance for a cable to run and still end up in a logical place. It also doesn't protrude into the cockpit which is quite limited in space, by design. No glove box in the normal glove box spot. . . a glove box door that didn't screw up the aesthetics would end up dropping onto the passenger's legs.
Heck, I'm sure they even considered glass or plastic for the rear window right from the beginning. Plastic gets you a larger, less expensive window. The glass is smaller and limits visibility but is more durable. On that issue they got enough feedback to change.
With a payload of only 400 pounds you can bet weight figured heavily into lots of decisions too, so perhaps they left a few things out that come in a Civic.
I say job well done even if I do have to lift my right arm and peer under my armpit to see into the center cubby hole.

Yeah, I agree for the price it's a good bargin, and even though it seemed as if I had a lot of gripes, I really don't.
