Marketing, what everyone else is saying. I read it in C&D or R&T a while ago, I know they are not the greatest, nor most reliable resources, but they were ranking colors of new cars. In US the popularity of colors changed from dark green in the 90's to silver in 2000. It turns out silver, dark silver/grey, and white were more popular colors, and I was surprised to see that black and red were not and spa was actually one of the lowest in regards to color popularity, along with... yup you guessed it, blue.

Suzuka blue was introduced to attract more women to the S2000. It was such a poor seller here in Canada that they discontinued it and brought in white with blue instead. Wise choice.
Suzuka is truly an awful colour that just can't hold a candle to MC Blue.

I recently sold a really nice Marina Green Mica (a metallic green) '97 Miata M-Edition with tan leather interior to buy my '03 S2K Silverstone/Red. I think the S2K is stunning and I get lots of compliments all the time, but I would have loved to have been able to buy a green on tan S2K. That color combination is just perfect for a sports car, I think!
