i usually shift around 3500-4000. lowest i'll go is probably ~2300 rpm if im in slow traffic. my mileage is only slightly better if i drive conservatively.

This is the kind of thing where you just drive your own car and figure out what it likes.....

2000 RPM, sometimes a bit lower if the car is going downhill. Just don't expect a lot of grunt down there, and be prepared to do a lot of dancing because you'll be in third by the time you clear the intersection.

That's how I'll drive if I'm being limited by traffic. Regular driving, probably 2.5-3K or so. Having fun? 8K!

But why would he want to short shift it?

3500rpms for 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 3,000rpms for 4-5, 5-6 shifts as minimum. Any less and your lugging the engine unless your going downhill. Shifting at 4,000 rpms accelerates fast enough to keep up with most traffic off the line without having to give it extra throttle (lugging).
This is exactly what I do as well.
