Miata best sports car under $40,000?

Miata has a great following, it's been around over ten year's now. It's remained pretty true to it's original design over that time as well - which I applaud. It's clearly the best in the $25k range IMO. I love the looks, balance, etc.
I am no fan of Automobile magazine. I don't know what their logic was but we all know most of these magazine's seem to get in bed with a handful of manufacturer's -- who then can do no wrong.
If I was not willing to spend the additional $10k, I might have had a Miata in the driveway -- except their dealership network is much worse than Honda's IMO. But I did spend the extra $10k and find it was worry every penny and then some.
Clearly our car is the new benchmark for under $40k and frankly I'm puzzled when it's left out of any comparison of sportscars by any of the car magazines. At first I attributed that to scarcity but that's not true any longer. No matter. We owner's know and that's all that really matters.

The MX5 (Miata) is a great sportscar that more than anything revived the present interest in roadsters. Why knock it? On the subject of the S2000 Jeremy Clarkson (Ex Top Gear) (Love him or hate him) knows a thing or two about cars, and was recently asked by the 'Sunday Times' to pick the top car in each category, SUV's, saloons, hatches, etc. In the open top sports car category he simply said " Unless you're spending upwards of

Best sports car for who? That is the 40,000$ question.
I don't know, maybe the Miata is the lowest common denominator. Lets face it, the S2000 isn't for everyone. Its a purist car if ever there was one. Maybe the author's audience was the general public who buys Kia's and toyota tercels. For them, yea, the Miata is probably a good choice...not expensive and still fun.
BTW, I wonder why the Miata is called the MX-5 in Europe and not the US?
