I'm finding that I get better gas mileage not shortshifting. Instead of accelerating at near full throttle to 3500 in each gear, I accelerate with much less throttle, but run the engine out to 4500. I think this has everything to do with the innefficiency (relatively speaking) of the engine at lower engine speeds.

I have read most rods [in the S2K?] are thrown at lower RPMs. Honda's suggested shift points for best MPG are around 4k for lower gears, and 3k for 4-6. It's just natural for me in this car to shift above 3k.. just feels right and 3k comes so quickly

[QUOTE=accordr33,Apr 25 2006, 06:47 PM]although you are not boggling the engine at low speed/high gears, but doesn't that still put stress to the engine?

The S2K is not a torque monster. 3k rpm's is not in the rev range that I would use to shift into 5th or 6th gears.

If you shifted at 3k in the higher gears, why not shift at 3k in the lower gears

For highway driving, cruise control can make a BIG difference. All of those subtle throttle inputs you make without cruise really add up. I know cruise takes a bit of the 'driving' out of things, but want fun is highway driving anyway?

One thing not mentioned so far is the effect of engine start/stop on fuel economy. I find that my mileage drops off alot if there are numerous engine start/stops in a tank (running erands, driving out to lunch, etc). But I average 27-29 MPG on long hauls.

I think for the AP1 for best mpg, honda recommends shiting at 15, 25, 40, 47, 52 mph.. which is around 4k for 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 3k for 4-5, 5-6. This has been posted here before, but I don't know where it came from initially.. and I'm an EE, not an ME so don't ask me why
