Lost power on the freeway. Any ideas?
#1
Yesterday afternoon, I was traveling in the fast lane and had to slow to about 30 when I started seeing red lights ahead of me. At that point, the engine cut out, the dash lights went out, but the radio kept going. I pulled in to the emergency lane, sat there for 30 seconds thinking what I was going to do, and then decided to try a restart. The engine fired up O.K. and I was on my way again. I've since done 2 x 12 mile freeway trips and haven't had any further problem.
Anyone have an idea what may have caused this? Could it something as simple as a low battery?

If the dash lights died, it's definitely an electrical problem, though I can't really help much beyond that. My first check would be with the alternator and/or battery. If the alternator died, the battery should still supply power to the dash. If the battery was dead, I wouldn't expect the engine to crank back over. Hmmmm......

Good point Mike. I did the rebored TB install on Saturday, with Prolene. A (very) little coolant did drip down onto the alternator, but the engine was pretty hot, so it should have evaporated pretty quickly. I'll check the alternator anyway, along with the wiring for the Hella horns which I installed about a month ago. Thanks for the suggestion. (BTW. I was posting this to see whether anyone else had had a similar unexplained occurrence which was fixed by the dealer.)
No. I didn't see any saucers hovering over me, but it was definitely a close encounter of the weird kind.
