little help....
Already posted this in under the hood, but meant to post it here...sorry for the duplicate guys...anyways, so is it bad for the s2000 to start from a stop in 2nd or 3rd gear...etc...and why is it better for the clutch when you shift to neutral and then brake when slowing down, as opposed to disengaging the clutch and braking at the same time while staying in gear? I always thought by doing the latter you're not harming the clutch anyway, but i heard the first way is better for some reason....anyone? Thanks...

The S2000 doesn't have the torque to start cleanly in 2nd or 3rd gear.
My F-150 pickup with the 300 ci 6-cylinder can start out in 2nd gear no problem. My Ducati 900 can start out in 2nd or 3rd fairly easily. My S2000 has enough of a problem starting out smoothly in 1st gear because it just doesn't have much power at low engine speeds.
You would have to slip the clutch too much to start out in other than first gear. So, why do you want to do that?
As for the other question about slowing down, there's no real difference between the two things you've described. Who is telling you it's better to shift to neutral?

thanks man...clarifies things a bit...regarding the first question i had though...i should revise it a little and give this scenario...say you're rolling through a stop sign or you're making a slow turn and you're in 2nd or 3rd gear...so do you downshift to 1 after breaking to slow down or do you jus keep it in gear (2nd/3rd) and accelerate after the stop sign/turn?

I guess to me, pulling away from a stop sign means that I actually came to a complete stop.
My personal rule is, if I'm not in a hurry (i.e., can give it just a tiny bit of gas as opposed to flooring ti) and the engine doesn't drop below 1000 to 1500 rpms, I don't need to shift to a lower gear.
Of course, the whole reason for owning a car like the S2000 is that you need to actually drive it to get the most from it. The car rewards you for finding the right gear for the conditions.
I would recommend that you find some back street with no traffic and find out for yourself how the car behaves in 2nd and 3rd gear when you slow down to 1500 or 1000 rpms, then slowly accelerate back up to speed. You'll learn something useful.
