There was a pretty good thread on this in the SoCal forum recently - go take a peek there. Too bad you missed out on our most recent dash of unbe-firckin-leivable weather, but you may get lucky!

If you're going to be staying down in San Diego, you can't beat the Hotel Del Coronado IMHO.

Things to do in San Diego: drive down to La Jolla Cove (take L J Scenic Drive) and see the seals, drive through Balboa Park and see the museums (esp. Aerospace and Automotive) and the loonies, drive up and down 101 by the ocean in North County looking cool with the top down, avoid trying to park in the downtown Gaslamp district, drive up to Julian for apple pies. Above all, do not be tempted to drive into Mexico. . .

This location was voted as one of the best kissing spots in Southern California. The view is awesome, and the road that you take to get to it has a great view of the ocean while you drive on it.

I'll also try to come up with some detailed driving directions for some nice drives through various parts of San Diego.

If you want to take the long way to San Diego from LA and do some wine tasting, you might want to go through Temecula. It's off the 15 freeway, about halfway between LA and San Diego. All the wineries are off the Rancho California Road offramp. It's definitely not the fastest way to get to San Diego. The fastest way would be to take the 5 freeway (or use the 405 to get onto the 5).
