Default Insurance while in storage

I have stored my '02 S2K for the winter months here in Ohio. The car is paid for. What insurance should I carry while in storage. Is fire and theft enough or do I need to also carry liability here in Ohio even though the car will not be on the road until spring?

Ask your agent.
I take liability off, keeping collision/theft/fire

I just put mine in storage. Typically you have 3 coverages - Liability for your errors, collision for accidents and comprehensive for falling trees, deer hits, fires in the garage. I take off liability and collision since I won't be driving til April and leave comprehensive. That should be all you need..... but check with your agent.

Ohio may require you to surrender your licence plate. Not a big deal, just buy a new one when your ready to drive again. Liability won't be required while in storage.

Why do you keep collision?

VA requires tags surrendered also if liability is removed. Not worth it here since you may get snow today now or 75 degree day on Xmas.

Most of the time (around my area anyway) insurance is calculated on an annual basis. So...

1)Many states do not allow cancellation of insurance (any and all, including liability) until you PROVE to them that you have turned in the plates (ie NY/NJ). That means, every spring, you will need to register/inspect the car, which costs money.

2)In my experience, you actually pay MORE money for part time coverage if it is available. The best deal is for 12 months. Think of it as taking a 24 month lease rather than a 36 month.

However, it doesn't hurt to ask.
