I'd ask your insurance agent.
Perhaps a defensive/safe driver course.
I'm assuming you're a male. Get used to bad rates for the next 13 years. Unless you get married.

Sigh, I'm sure I'm not the only one here who remembers THIS problem. There are insurance brokers that you can try, who might find you a policy that doesn't cost more than the actual car. As a freshman in college a friend of mine bought a Trans Am and he was paying $5,000/year for pretty slim coverage. Got rid of that car after a year though.

Check costco.com as well, they offer insurance through Amex. My rates with Allstate were about $2800/6months. The Costco/Amex was $400/6months for better coverage. Of course I'm not 17 but it's worth checking out.

We're in the same boat bro, my insurance is ass high. It doesn't help when you're a male, teen, driving a new car, driving a sports car, and getting speeding tickets ever so often...

Are you living at home? You could be considered a secondary driver, with your father or mother as primary. Can you classify the car as pleasure-use only? No matter what, you won't be paying anything reasonable. You know prices will be complete extortion when the government mandates you have to have something by law but then expects a private company to provide it at a fair price.

Taking a car to school can affect rates and putting someone as primary on a car that they rarely if ever drive can cause problems down the road if a claim is ever filed. Some agents will automatically put the cheapest person as the primary. That is fine if that was their suggestion and decision, as they can't decide not to cover the claim, as they are the ones who decided to put on which cars.
Basically, talk to the agent and let them decide who should be on what cars.
