Installed Street Pilot III

James,
I like that mount. It worked out very well. Where have you stashed the speaker? I've been thinking of hardwiring the sound output into my headunit, if it's possible, which I think it is.
BTW, I took the StreetPilotIII on the trip to Oberlin over the past two day and it saved us around Cleveland. The Hertz people sent us off in the wrong direction to the hotel and we got lost, so I just pulled out the StreetPilot, plugged it in, punched in the hotel address, and it guided us there. Without it we would have been driving around for an hour.

Great info in this thread! Having just moved to Maryland 3 weeks ago, and realizing that the streets in Columbia don't run North/South, East/West, or for any matter in any one particular direction, I've been disoriented quite a few times. Judging from S2K LA and Sunchild's posts, I'm not so sure about my idea of getting the GPS plug-in for my Handspring. $150 for that sounds better than $800, but if it doesn't work....... it's a waste.
Anyone have experience with the Handspring GPS modules rather than the Palm/Compaq?
Thanks!
Rick- you were near my old stompin' grounds between Cleveland/Oberlin! Much less traffic out there, huh?

vmb,
I have used the SolusPro product from Delorme http://www.delorme.com You can actually download for free the solusbasic3.0 that will only display a map. This would atleast let you see the map detail. On my Palm VII I was not impressed.
To my knowledge the Handspring product runs Palm OS. So you would need the Delorme Earthmate Roadwarrior edition. It has the GPS, Street Atlas software, and the SolusPro for PalmOS. I have seen it for around $170 for the package.
Hope this helps...

Ahh, resurrecting this thread from the dead hehe....
James, one question - I have a mount pretty similar to what you have, but one thing
I noticed is that my GPS is loose - the weight of the StreetPilot III causes to shift
forward when I brake and shift back when I accelerate. Wondering if you have
the same issues, or if you use a longer bolt to tighten the #9 part to the side of the
passenger well....

The Ram mount enables you to move the device up and down to create more clearance. But you know that even here in the cold Northeast I rarely drive with my top up if I can avoid it

According to Garmin it is due to be released here in March 2002.
That said, I don't know if it'll have maps then. Pacific Access, the company that does the White and Yellow Pages and WhereIs system, compiled the mapping data that is used by the Philips Carin/VDO Dayton and Blaupunkt systems. They have some exclusive agreement between PA and Philips for the maps and the license fee for the data is something phenomenal. That's why we don't get the Alpine, Clarion, or Pioneer systems here.
Don't know whether Garmin will cough up the money for a license, and even if they do it may be 2 year old data (no M5 or Brisbane City Bypass).
I'm expecting delivery of my VDO system from Germany (basically got it for about 1/2 price, $2000) and will be installing using the JDM Nav facia. Mind you, I won't be surprised if the second I cut my dashboard Garmin announce the StreetPilot for Aus!
