Default Insane Asking Prices for '00 '01 S2000's?

im hoping to make the s2000 my next car and am planning to purchase one during summer. however, looking through autotrader discourages me quite a bit. the cheapest asking price on a first year s2k is 19 grand, with the highest asking price being around 29k on a first year s2000!!! i know that the kbb on a first year s2000 with decent mileage is around 24k, but the real market value is probably closer to 22-23k i believe. with asking prices this high, how can i ever expect to get these people to sell there car for its actual worth, instead of a ridiculously high asking price that some uninformed car buyer will pay, making it all the harder to find an s for the right price?

The real worth of any purchase is what somebody is actually willing to pay for it; no more, no less.

I'm confused. You say you've seen one for 19k and then go on to say you think market value is 22-23k. First of all, remember an asking price is an asking price and people are going to get as much as they think they can get. As a seller you can always lower your price but it's much more difficult to raise it. When you're ready to buy find cars with the features you want and in the condition you want. Make an offer. Either they accept it or they don't. Lastly, if someone is willing to pay 29k for a first year S2K then that's what the car is worth. The market is defined by what people are willing to pay. That doesn't make them an uninformed car buyer. It just makes them a statistic that helps set the market value.

In the back of autoweek I think there was a MY00, guy said it listed at $43K, ROFL, he must have been one of the boobs that got riped early on. I have seen some good prices in the for sale forum here, just be pataint, check the WTS/WTT forums on a regular basis, and you should have your self an S soon.

I'm having the same issue. Dealers in particular seem intent on raping people on prices. Around here, most of them are asking $27k plus for an '01. $25k plus for an '00.

Just keep your eyes open very carefully. I'm hoping that I've found my car if I can get someone to take a look at it for me before I drive up to Dallas for it.

I never said you personally were looking for a car for 15K. I was extrapolating out from original purchase price to a 50% depreciation using the NSX as a model. The '91 NSX was around 60K, at 10 years old, they were just starting to dip below 50%. If the S2000 follows this example, they will hold their values very well.

Dealers have more risk than indivduals, it is normal for them to charge more. This is true in all regions on all cars. As for making an extra 2K, it's a business not a charity. If the market (your area) bears it, they will charge it. If nobody buys it, the blue book will change in two months and they will stand to make less profit. At a certain point they will need to adjust, or lose money (this is the risk I speak of). My point is, nobody's been raped till they spend their money, and even then, if they made their decision, they can hardly complain about it. You haven't spent your money yet, you are only complaining that the price isn't what you want to pay. I'm sure that on an S2000 forum (with a bunch of owners who may one day sell their cars and want good money for it) is not a good place to get sympathy.

FWIW, the resudual value of my '01 is 20,600. My lease ends in June '04. This is what a dealer would have to pay to buy my car from AHFC 13 months from now!
