License Plates and Registration Cards
Most vehicles are required to have two license plates. License plate frames should not cover any of the information on the license plates.
Cars and other vehicles have two plates, one on the front and one on the rear.
When a vehicle is sold, the license plates should be removed and kept by the seller. In Illinois, license plates remain with the owner, not the vehicle.
Motorcycles, motorized pedal-cycles, trailers, semitrailers and buses registered under the appor-tionment provisions display one license plate on the rear of the vehicle.
Truck-tractors and apportioned straight trucks have one license plate on the front of the vehicle.
When you receive your license plates or sticker, you will also receive a registration card. This should be carried in your vehicle or on your person when you are driving.

I got cited in Chicago for not having a front plate. I was on my way to get some chinese, came to a complete stop, got out of the car and started walking toward the place. The police officer then pulled up behind, asked for my license and insurance...imagine how surprised I was..Took away my license, I have court on Nov 8th (almost two months away from when I got cited)(I've never heard of anyone ever getting their license taken away for no front plate) The only good news is, it's a fix it ticket....

My neighbor is a friend with captain of our local area and in charge of taking care of racer also. He said almost every one at his work doesn't have a front license plate but they use front plate to have a reason to pull you over us and just harass us.

I have yet to be pulled over for failure to have a front license plate. I think it is just a matter of time before that happens. However, I have MI plates on my car, and MI does not have front plates.. so i am not worried about getting a ticket... I got a ticket in Chicago for not having one even though i had MI plates.. That was a bitch to fight..

if you're required to have one and you get pulled over for speeding, that's another fine they can tack onto you're ticket. it looks better without one, but to me that's not worth the hassle. why give cops another reason to pull you over?

It all depends on where you live. Some parts of the world requires a front plate and some parts do not. The penalty, if you are required to have one and you do not have it, will also depend on where in the world you live. It can range from a warning to something much more serious. The best action is to check with your local vehicle code.
