a WRX or god forbid an SRT-4. I liked the SRT better than all the other cars in the price range really (24-25k new). I didn't mind the interior so much and it drove well. but then I found a used S2K and I am damn glad I did.

I had a modified 91 Miata before my S - if the S wasn't available I may have gone for the Mazdaspeed Miata - fun factor is right up there although actual speed performance is about 67% of the S ...handling, feel, perception yada yada are all there for considerably less than than 30K..
for more than 30K? 350Z Roadster? Boxter S? maybe even a TT with mods...
but fortunately I got & love the S.

I really liked the styling on the SLK. I was pretty interested in that until I found out how slow the thing is.
I would have looked pretty seriously at the Z3 or Z4, but probably wouldn't have been willing to plunk down the cash.
I probably would have settled for a Miata or an MR2 Spyder.
I doubt I would have considered it seriously at the time, but a Z06 would have been the best choice if now S2000.
