Just to throw some info out there for general knowledge about the military and their "bonuses."
Even when bonuses were "high" in the Army, you never got the full amount the day you enlist. hell, even AFTER you finish basic/ait/osut and arrive at your unit, you only get a max of $7000 that first year. They divide the rest of the bonus into the amount of years you have left and pay you annually on 1st of each year.
So that scenario that someone put up about bonuses and VA loans won't fly at all. Secondly, unless you're married or senior enlisted, the military will not pay you BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and while Private Snuffy's pay has been steadily increasing each year, it's definitely not enough to cover mortgage payments.
The only plausible option would be a re-enlistment bonus and the re-enlistment would have to be in theatre. But even still, that doesn't remedy the fact that Private Snuffy will not be able to continue to pay his mortgage payment. (I speak from experience from OIF tours. Plural.)
Again, just some knowledge thrown on the internet. If it doesn't pertain to you, or you don't really about how the military works, then thats fine. Just move along.

As far as how USMC feels... I think I can somewhat relate. Being in the military for a few years now, there are generally three types of new recruits that I encounter.
1. He used to be a MMA fighter... Yeah... Everyone that comes in used to be an MMA fighter. Usually need to squash these ego's quick by a nice rear-naked choke or a triangle choke before they get stupid.
2. He used to be a millionaire but gave it up to enlist in the Army. While I'm not disagreeing that there are a small group of people who were successful and enlisted, but come on now....
3. The last group is pretty broad and is filled with pretty squared away individuals. Honest to themselves by either admitting they used to be drug addicts, alcoholics, or just didn't want to or could afford to go to college. I prefer this group cause they can at least admit to themselves.
Now because of this... I try to swift through peoples bullshit which is what I figured USMC was doing. While I might not call everyone out, I can definitely tell when someone is just lying to me about something. Isn't it nice that your tax dollars are used to pay for my salary so I can tell people are bullshitting? haha, its okay, I pay taxes too.
Maybe its just an Infantry thing? But like someone said, its just a lifestyle.

^^ yea i think we can see bullshit do to geting all the new guys in. But i would say u are wrong on the BAH. I'm here in pensacola now and its a training command well E-1 to E-3 that just came in get BAH here. Due to there is no brks for permenit staff here. But this is not the norm at all i was like WTF when i came here wished when i was those ranks i could get BAH. Glade to see some of us educating the general public out there. And ur so right about the new guys ethier i was in MMA or i was makeing $50k a year before i got in. Well lucky me i am a martial arts instructor so i get to put my guys to the test when the come at me with some BS like that.

yeah i put the info up in the "scenario." i just threw out the bonus out there but in the situation it is divided up, a little mis-information but with the 18-year old newbie he can still get a good down payment on a car, regardless of no credit history.
regarding bah, the "scenario" also stated he got married, immediately putting him in off base housing, hence bah, hence the funds to pay for an apartment or purchasing a house through VA. with VA, there is 0% down and he just stretches the payments or purchase price to align with bah. i'm sure 08yellowcr can confirm that bah in the panhandle is $1200 per month + $300 bas + base pay.
VA information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VA_loan
so, it is still possible for an 18-year old to have a mortgage/house, a car, a wife, and a dog and none of it paid for by "daddy."

My parents bought my brother a ford escort new; he did not take the best care of the car, so they didn't want the same thing to happen again.
(Well, they were correct about me taking care of the car. I took the car into the dealer the other day for a 30k mile service and the technicians and service department staff all said they thought the car looked like new, but I digress.)

i don't see why some people don't believe younger age groups can't buy this car on their own. if they are working full time since 18, it shouldn't be too hard to afford one. of course the priorities will be out of whack since most of the money will be going to the car but they can still afford one. i'm having trouble saving up because i work like 7 hours a week since i'm going to school full time pretty much a 9-5 everyday. if i worked full time though i could probably buy an ap2 in 6 months lol.

To you Seaman.. please stay on your ship and don't let your mouth loose to me. I'm a war vet and if your anything less then an E-4 you better stand down. If you had some form of attention to detail you'd read all of these posts and see that I'm just callin' this kid out.. just like I would to new Marines in my infantry unit. But, I forget - the Navy is a job not a lifestyle like the Corps where we actually break-in our newbies by calling them out..
The Navy breaks in our newbies just like any other branch. Don't condescend to me because you've spent time in the jungles, etc. while in infantry. I respect you like I do every other person, even more so for what you did for the country and for what your branch stands for. But, that being said, I will not stand by idly and with-hold my opinion simply because I don't play in the sandbox.
And speaking to you on an equal playing field, I am plenty ranked to speak to you when you're making a mistake. Drop it. I'm not going to continue this.

Understood seaman I apologize for hastily lashing out. Yeah I agree with you staff sgt about the bsing newbs. Maybe your right it could be an infantry thing as we do get a lot of bsers trying to fit in and not get hazed..
Oh and I never said an s2k was unaffordable to 18 year olds.. like I said anyone with a full time job can afford one nowadays with ap1s going for 10k.. its when this kid spouted off on having a mortgage is when my bs detector really went off.
I wouldn't know about sign on bonuses.. I didn't get any just a uniform and a shipment date to iraq 4months after soi...
