When launching a lot depends on the road surface too, and I've found the car does better the cooler it is.

When it's done right, it's a thing of beauty. But if you're having this much trouble, you are wise to stop.
As someone already started to say, it is important to be able to "read" the road surface and the ambient temp where you are. Sometimes, you can get away with a 5K drop if it's cool enough (under 10*C - these are the ones I do most just for fun because the tires spin easily). Other times, it might take 6K. And maybe 7K is needed elsewhere. Having drag raced at lot in my mis-spent youth, I learned to read the pavement so one day (25*C, sunny, newish packed asphalt, quite black, not very porous, tires @36psi) I decided to do a 6K drop and it was perfect planned.
