I have been reading for over a couple of years now, the warnings of fellow S2kiers how bad the S02s are in the rain. Tuesday gave me my opportunity to echo those warnings. In the rain, they ain

*nods* my first set of SO2's were about toast at that time. Not sure about this, as I'm only on my second set of rears, but it seems to me that they are fine for a while, then suddenly go bad in the rain. I've got around 10k on the second set, and really need to watch them now. We had a rain recently and I was going 45-50 on the freeway.

High performance tires are not the problem. I believe the tire itself is the problem. My vehicle was bought second hand and has a different type of tire on it. The rears need replacing badly. I noticed on a recent road trip that I hydroplaned in standing water. Fortunately, I was pretty prepared for the effects, and was able to steer out of it. I was doing about 45-50 mph each of the 3 times it happened.
I intend to fit a set of high performance tires that are suited to wet weather use. I only wish the Michelin Pilot PS2 was available in a size suitable for stock rims.

Sorry to hear about your accident. My rear S02s lasted me close to 30,000km (20,000 miles) with 2 track days. Maybe I drive too conservatively. 
If you look at the rear OEM S02s the tread pattern is unique in that the water channels are very narrow compared to other tyres or even the front S02s. A light car with wide tyres and narrow water channels is always going to be more susceptible to hydroplaning.

The RE050's on the MY04's seem to do well in the rain, I even have a hard time sliding the rear when I am trying to do it on wet streets. granted my tires only have 1700 miles on them.

MY01 that I purchased used, came with Delta Esteem 225/50R16 tyres on the rear. ( look new)
Haven't had them in the rain, but the water channels seem fairly wide
I was planning on replacing them with S02's soon.
After reading this, now I'm not sure what to do
Any sugeesstions?

sorry to hear, at least you're not hurt and the car will be fixable. i'm sitll curious to see tests on the re050 vs s02 for wet handling..tirerack doesn't have specs yet
