FWIW - I have had many good experiences, both as a seller and as a buyer, on Craigslist. Like any for sale ad, maybe a bit more on internet listings, you do have to keep your wits about you and assess the the people you are dealing with and take care to protect yourself and your privacy until you are able to make that assessment.

A lot of people think of purchasing a vehicle in terms of payments: what can they afford. If you start paying "yourself" ( and I mean sticking to it, use a separate saving account if you need to) and throw what the usual monthly payment in an account to use the next time you purchase a car. Now you can pay cash, you will have some leverage, and can start saving again for the next vehicle. The nice thing is you are getting a little interest on savings instead of paying interest to a Credit Union or bank. I will give you some of the "free money" no interest loans can be a good deal.

I found my car on Craigslist after several months of searching. I was also checking carfax, cars.com, cargurus and autotrader. Autotrader has a pretty good number of private party sellers and carfax you get to see the carfax upfront for free. if I remember correctly cargurus also had a decent number of private sellers.

Dear all, reviving an older thread and I would like some advise in regards to buying a car through eBay.

I've started talking to a seller and apparently, eBay will transfer the title and ownership. eBay will deliver the vehicle, and the buyer will have 3 days to inspect the vehicle. If the buyer rejects the vehicle after the inspection, eBay will refund the money and take possession of the vehicle.

Is that correct? Thank you!

Caveat ēmptor. I didn't see any of that in a quick look at How to sell a car on Ebay.

I bought it from a private party, but actually financed it. I don't have the best credit in the world, but I have great auto-loan payment history, so my credit union was able to give me 1.99% APR for 36 months and my payments are less than $200 a month.

If it’s a toy, you shouldn’t finance. I have a DD and paid cash for my S2000.
