Default How to shift perfectly all the time

after 3 years i have finally learned how to change gears in the s2000

to all other newbies like me here it is

1st to 2nd - place 2 fingers in the front of the shift knob and gently nudge the shifter straight back in one swift motion. the key is straight, let the shifter find its way into the gear. boom , perfect shift every time.

Requires finesse, not the usual full fist macho shift ( as required in my prior M3).

2nd to3rd - place thumb and palm behind shifter and nudge forward. again let the shifter find its way, another quick perfect shift.

used to dread the 1-2 shift , now i look forward to it.

enjoy

1st to 2nd will grind in mine if I try to shift to quikly. To solve this I just do 1,2 count before shifting to second problem solved

Think of it in a similar way to rev matching on the downshift. You catch the revs with the desired gear.

I found that, at least with the AP2, it helps to let the revs drop and wait a little before selecting the next gear. I'm almost sure this is due to the heavier flywheel.

I never had a grinding 1-2, but it took me a few weeks to get it consistently smooth. The 1-2 shift involves the biggest change in rpm because of the large difference in ratios, so shifting like I normally would (quickly) made the car buck because the rpms were still too high for 2nd gear.

I just shift into 2nd slower, probably twice as slow as any other shift and it's smooth. Sometimes it sucks pulling away from traffic at a light, but at least I'm kind to the car.

My son has a 2006 Accord 6 speed and he has similar problems from second to third. It will spit the shifter out of gear if he's not slow and deliberate. Is this just a common Honda manual transmission problem?

the RSX's have syncro problems too, IIRC, with second gear as well.

my 1-2 shift was corrected with a slow/pause shift. i never dragged the s2k so i never had a need to implement the reverse grip or some other quick gear banging method...

i felt a big diff between 1-2 shift after my cdv was taken out... it still requires finess at times (especially when cold) but cdv removal was subtle yet importance change in my shifting technique
