Default How To Paint The S2000 A Different Color

I'm considering changing the body color on my S2000.

My biggest concern is that the old color will still show in some areas.

For those of you who have painted another color, how far did you go with the stripping/masking, and are you happy with the results?

Any advice is appreciated.

If you want it done right.
1. Take every panel, bumper, fender off.
2. Gut whole interior
3. Pull Engine.

Basically with that done you dont need to do much masking. Except for a/c hoses, brake lines and such if u leave those.

I am changing the paint on my project neon and I have been periodically working on it for 3 years now..

Otherwise someone will see a differ color and then it will look stupid.

The biggest problem is prep. Even a fully stripped car shell (Everything off of the main section of the car) if not prep'ed properly, some paint will peel. Having been part of full repaint and build, there is always a chance that the under color will show if the paint is chipped. I know of a few spots that we have had an issue with. They are small, and touch up paint just look off. It build was a custom color.

Knowing you the way I do, it would drive you nuts. So if you are going to do this, consider a full body strip by a media blaster. Living in the LA area should help you find one. They will strip the car down to bare metal and paint from there. Now that you will be happy with.

If you want to know what to do your self, and how to save some time on the rebuild, let me know. I have done one personally. I stripped and then rebuilt it. Lots of work, but I did learn a few things that I would do differantly if I was to do it again.

If you take off the doors and fenders and tape off the interior it should be good. Just remove every molding and every light/panel that you can. I'd take off the windshield tape and molding too as well as the molding around the cabin. Need to take off the fuel filler door. Trunk and hood are going to need paint all the way around so you might need new insulation for the hood since it's ussually pretty brittle. I could go on for a while..
