I'm curious to see how many of us actually go to the parts discussion or the off-topic places. I know flyingpig is there all the time but he's just a nut for OT

Funny you should ask. . .last week we were trying to organize a VA gathering. Only two people responded eventhough we're usually able to get pretty good turnouts even on short notice. I concluded that people just weren't going to the "planning room" on a regular basis. I'm not quite sure why we need a separate room for planning. Using the main forum has worked well in the past and I doubt there's much of an argument that it intereferes with other discussion. Thus, in answer to your question, almost never, like most people around here (or at least the one's from VA! ).

I find the Parts Counter forum very useful, so I check it for updates on Rick's stuff and other group buys quite often.

perhaps then the moderators can allow us to post some of these topics, and move them (link them) to different areas, yet still retaining the link on the main forum?

You people are missing the whole point and flexibility of having separate forums.

If someone posts a meet on the main page it's going to be on the second or third page by the end of the day.

If it's posted in the Meets and Events forums, it will stay on the front page because only current events are in that forum. Past events get moved to the Past Meets and Events archive about a week after the event or people stop posting to it.

It's like folders and subdirectories on your hard drive. Do you keep all of your files in the root directory of your C: drive? Of course, not, you wouldn't be able to find anything. The forums work the same way as folders.

To make another point, look at the rooms in your house. You park your car in the garage, you prepare your food in the kitchen, you eat it in the dining room, you watch TV in the family room or living room and you sleep in your bedroom.

If everyone realized this, the system would work. Instead, some people post things where they should be and others don't. Since there isn't any consistency, things get lost. The more people that we have here, the harder it's going to be to find things.

People like Rick Hesel have embraced the idea of a separate forum for group buys since it keeps these specific topics in a specific place and makes them easier to find.

Are we such old dogs that we can't learn new tricks? We are not limited to one forum like were were on h-a.net. Learn to use the additional flexibility! Why are you fighting it?

well, i don't mind reading other forums, really, and i can see the logic behind that. but my concern was how many people actually go to the other forums and read them?

Tom,

With all due respect, have you never watched tv in the kitchen or eaten in bed, or taken a nap in the family room? I think this forum is a lot like sex. It usually takes two or more to make it interesting, more than one position (topic) creates variety which equals interest, and its no fun to have to go looking for it. I can understand having the different forums for different interests but it would be nice to have the initial post placed in the show room first for all to see.

Of course you are not going to see the activity in the special interest forums that you see here, they are special interest. If you dont want to buy something, you aren't going to go to the parts counter right?

The process is simple. If you are selling something, you create a post in the Parts Counter with the info. Then you create a post in the showroom with a summary and a link to the buy. The announcement will probably blow off the front page in a few hours but the buy post will remain at the top. You can reannounce the buy by replying to your announce post and that will send it back to the front page. The same works for meets.

UBB lacks a lot of features in this regard and that is why I'm looking at other options. None of the current software really supports the model of this board very well so there is some custom development needed to make this work well. I'm looking at all of these things and should have a solution before Christmas.

Cheers.
