1st choice - both hands on the steering wheel.
2nd choice - left hand on steering wheel and right hand on top left thigh of a fine looking woman with great set of wheels herself.

If you're driving hard enough to unsettle yourself like that in a turn, you need to have TWO hands on the wheel. Putting pressure on the shifter like that is bad.

I find that the dead pedal is great to make right turns, it gives you support, but making left turns, there is no dead pedal for support and since my right hand naturally is holding the shifter, I guess I was thinking if anyone used it as a support once in gear. Seems though, the general consensus is no. The advice about putting the shifter into gear before turning and then using both hands for steering and using the steering wheel as support by pushing on it is a great idea, I will work that into my driving habits. Also, I find that body leans help too.
You arent using the dead pedal correctly then.

Push yourself straight back into the seat, and the seat will hold you there. If it doesnt work.. then you are not doing it correctly. If you were using the shift knob as a means of support while you are driving on the public street... please stop and do it on an autocross course (drive crazy on the course, just dont use the shift knob for an o shit handle).

During spirited drives, does anyone use their stick shift to support your weight as you make tight turns etc? I am just wondering if it is okay to put some weight and force on it when I am using it as a place to grab onto to prevent me from bouncing all over the place in tight turns. Does anyone else do this and will it cause damage?
no, hurts syncro's
and you might find that if you do this too much, you will pop out of gear from time to time.
